GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The majority of people seeking treatment have insecure attachment styles. They present with a variety of diagnoses, have difficulty regulating their emotions, and are often difficult to treat. By attending this workshop, you will learn to create an effective attachment-based compassion therapy framework that integrates emerging research and treatments rooted in attachment theory, neurophysiology, and compassion.

You will leave this hands-on, clinical workshop with an ability to use this framework to develop a healing therapeutic relationship and to use specific techniques to help clients and patients regulate their affect, nurture compassionate self-awareness, and increase secure attachment. Dr. Becker-Phelps will teach you to use various interventions aimed at increasing awareness in five domains (STEAM): Sensations, Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, and Mentalizing. Other interventions that increase self-compassion and compassionate self-awareness will also be presented. In addition, the workshop will show you when to integrate various treatment approaches, such as mentalization-based therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion-based treatment, sensory-based treatment, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand how insecure attachment undermines healthy relationships with self and others, impairs affect regulation, and keeps people stuck in unhealthy patterns

  • Understand the ways in which developing self-compassion and compassionate self-awareness can increase well-being

  • Guide treatment interventions using three functions of the attachment system and the five fundamental domains of awareness

  • Master how and when to integrate other modalities of treatment
