GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects over 3% of the population. Yet, the breadth of the spectrum is so broad and heterogeneous that it becomes perplexing as to how some individuals who are profoundly affected can carry the same diagnostic label as those with more subtle symptom expression. This workshop will help clinicians better understand the variability across the autism spectrum to accurately detect and diagnose ASD, to differentiate it from common conditions with overlapping symptom expression, and to support and accommodate strengths and vulnerabilities across the lifespan.
In this workshop, Dr Saulnier will explain how to not only detect and assess ASD, but also to adapt interventions, including psychotherapy, to this unique population.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Recognize the key and more subtle features of Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Understand how autism symptom expression differs across individual profiles based on cognitive and language levels, age, and sex/gender differences
- Identify common diagnostic differentials and overlapping symptomatology between ASD and related neurodevelopmental disorders
- Identify strategies to support and accommodate strengths and vulnerabilities across the lifespan and to adapt interventions, including psychotherapy
SPEAKER
Dr. Saulnier obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut. She trained and worked at the Yale Child Study Center’s Autism Program for nearly a decade before relocating to Emory University School of Medicine - where she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics - and the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, GA, where she directed a large-scale clinical research program. In 2018, she opened her own company, Neurodevelopmental Assessment & Consulting Services, where she specializes in diagnostic assessment, as well as teaching and training for autism spectrum and related disorders. Dr. Saulnier has published numerous articles, has authored books including Essentials of Autism Spectrum Disorders Evaluation and Assessment and Essentials of Adaptive Behavior Assessment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, and she is an author on the gold-standard Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition.
