GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This introductory workshop in Internal Family Systems Therapy will introduce mental health professionals to a powerful model for working with a wide range of clients. IFS therapy is gentle, respectful, and collaborative. Participants will be engaged by taking an inner journey to discover the richness of their internal lives and will be introduced to model’s principles and techniques that have been developed to help clients to heal deep wounds safely and effectively. This workshop will walk participants through the stages and steps of the model, followed by a live demonstration of what the therapy approach looks like. The model has shown success in treating a range of presenting problems, including sexual abuse and trauma, substance abuse, eating disorders, psychosomatic disorders, anxiety and depression, and relational conflicts.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Explore and discuss the basic assumptions of IFS in regard to nonpathological multiplicity of mind and the concept of Self.
- Develop a general knowledge of dysfunctional processes addressed in IFS therapy involving the three categories of extreme subpersonalities that most often present in therapy: manager parts, firefighter parts, exiled parts.
- Experience the goals, steps, and techniques of IFS therapy to release burdens that maintain dysfunctional processes of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
- Compare and contrast through discussion the nature of the therapeutic relationship in IFS compared to other models of psychotherapy.
