GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In this workshop, Dr Sears dives deep into Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), an 8-week, evidence-based program which combines mindfulness and cognitive therapy techniques for working wisely and effectively with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other issues. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, this workshop will cover the characteristics and components of the treatment, the structure and the delivery of the MBCT program, and the content of the eight MBCT sessions, and will examine the role of mindfulness for the clinician. Participants will be exposed to every technique and exercise in the MBCT protocol.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Identify the cognitive and emotional factors that worsen stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Understand the role that rumination has in perpetuating negative thoughts and behaviors.
- Understand the structure of the MBCT program.
- Implement mindfulness-based techniques to help clients de-center from the narrative of negative thoughts and emotions.
SPEAKER
Dr. Richard Sears, PsyD, PhD, MBA, ABPP, is a board-certified psychologist in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and runs a private psychology and consultation practice. He has conducted hundreds of mindfulness groups and was lead clinician in the first brain scan study involving mindfulness with children and adolescents. He is also an adjunct professor in the University of Cincinnati psychology department and a volunteer professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at the UC College of Medicine. Dr. Sears has written over a dozen books, including Mindfulness: Living Through Challenges and Enriching Your Life in the Moment (Wiley-Blackwell); Building Competence in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (Routledge); and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (Wiley-Blackwell).
Dr. Sears is a seventh-degree black belt in Ninjutsu, and once served as a personal protection agent for the Dalai Lama with his teacher, Stephen K. Hayes. He has studied Eastern Wisdom for over 40 years, receiving ordination in four traditions, and transmission as a Zen master.
